New titanium and iron diboride composite developed for cutting tools
24 dec 2024Scientists at Tomsk Scientific Center SB RAS have determined the optimal process conditions for making a composite material based on affordable titanium and ferroboron alloy powders using self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS). The resulting material promises to extend the life of heavy duty cutting tools, like those used in the woodworking industry. The research was published in the high-impact International Journal of Refractory Metals and Hard Materials. -
A neural network for microstructure analysis
24 oct 2024Research engineer Ivan Polyakov from Tomsk Scientific Center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences is developing software for the automatic analysis of a large number of microstructure images obtained using metallographic and electron microscopes. With a user-friendly interface, a neural network created and trained specifically for the purposes, and a bunch of original algorithms, scientists hope to gain a streamlined access to material property data, such as porosity, grain size, and phase composition. -
A technology for producing SiAlON filters for metal melts has been proposed at TSC SB RAS
3 oct 2024Scientists at Tomsk Scientific Center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences are developing optimal compositions and technology for producing oxide-nitride ceramics (SiAlON) via SHS nitriding. Being able to filter out various inclusions from metal melts, such products are in high demand in the metallurgy industry. The research is supported by the Russian Science Foundation (project No. 24-79-00117). -
High-quality pigments in three popular colors developed at TSC SB RAS
3 sep 2024Scientists at Tomsk Scientific Center SB RAS have developed a technology for producing fine inorganic pigments in three colors – blue, green, and khaki. The iron triad-based pigments produced via self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) are non-toxic and highly durable. The entire process takes minutes and does not require expensive equipment. The findings have been published in the first-quartile journal Ceramics International.
