By studying the combustion of a number of ferroalloys in nitrogen, the scientific basis for the technology of producing nitrided ferroalloys by the SHS method was established. At present this method is used to produce commercial nitrided ferroalloys by a number of Russian and foreign companies.

Ferroalloys nitrided by the SHS method can be used for:

- alloying of stainless, heat-resistant, electrical and low-alloy steels with nitrogen. Nitrided chromium and ferrochromium are used mainly for alloying of high-chromium stainless steels. Nitrided manganese and ferrovanadium - for smelting of low-alloy high-strength steels. Nitrided ferrosilicon is used mainly for alloying of electrical and silicon-containing steels.

- production of welding and surfacing electrodes;

- production of film heaters;

- production of protective and wear-resistant coatings;

- manufacture of catalysts, etc.
